QUESTION: Hi! My hubby and I purchased a Pan Abode Cedar home that was built in 1979. It’s approximately 1450sq feet, one story. It’s in decent condition however it’s faded a bit. We got a price quote from a company to walnut blast and stain the home. The cost was $24,500 plus tax and 3 weeks lodging cost (at $150/day) Is this an accurate price? It seems very high and out of our price range. Is there a cheaper option? We would be be willing to DIY it but don’t have commercial equipment and are unsure of the best process. It is possible to hand sand the house? Also, is the walnut blasting even necessary since the house is in good condition (no rot or greying). Could we just do a log wash and stain? What would you recommend for people who cannot afford a $25,000 project but want to maintain the home? Thank you!
ANSWER: That price is almost exactly what we would charge if you were within a couple of hundred miles from us for a 1,500 sq ft house. I would not recommend a home owner try media blasting, but you absolutely could sand it and stain it yourself. If the finish is not too faded or peeling you could do a light wash and apply a couple of coats of the same kind of stain that is on it now. Do not try to just put any stain over the existing as they may not be compatible.
