My builder install a coat of boiled linseed oil mi

QUESTION:  My builder install a coat of boiled linseed oil mixed with turpentine on my timbers. Can I apply a stain over this? Something like Cabot Australian timber oil of Penofin log on?

ANSWER:  My first response would be to say no.  You shouldn't mix products like that.  The problem with the linseed oil and turpentine is that it promotes black mildew on the logs and can turn very black over time.  I would call your supplier of the Australian Timber Oil and find out their recommendations.

If you ever get the chance to strip the home back to bare wood, stick with a good quality latex stain made for log homes like LifeLine or Capture/Cascade.
