Question: I have a log cabin that dates back to the early 1800's, completely in inside my house (not exposed to the elements). The logs were covered by wood paneling for about the last 100 years. How do I clean these hand hewn logs without sanding them and using minimal water since the logs are inside a finished space? I want to prepare the logs to be stained and re-chinked. The logs are dirty, dusty, has some remnants of the white chinking and mud chinking. Small spots of blueish/green "fungus/mold" in limited areas. Is a cement based grout/mortar okay for chinking in this application since the logs are not exposed to the elements/moisture and are in a conditioned space?
Answer: The best way would be to media blast with crushed glass and then Osborne brush the logs prior to staining. I would recommend the latex chinking like Perma Chink.
